The families of 60,000 Australian men lost in World War One had some consolation in knowing that soldiers who bodies could be identified were to be given dignified marble headstones and they were offered an opportunity to write an epitaph to be engraved on the headstone.

No consolidated list of epitaphs exists but John and Hazel Laffin have been collecting them from the graves themselves for decades. These inscriptions, in their great variety, present a picture of Australians for the period.

This compassionate and intriguing book tells us much about the effects of World War I on Australia. It is a catalogue of courage in response to a most terrible tragedy.
