Warden to tanager

raaf operations in east timor

David Wilson

The role of the Royal Australian Air Force in East Timor was pivotal to the success of Interfet and the subsequent United Nations operations, yet, to date, little has been written on the subject. This book, by David Wilson, provides the reader with an account of that involvement. The success of the operations described in this book resulted from ordinary Australians being capable of extraordinary deeds. Once again the men and women of the Royal Australian Air Force, along with their counterparts from the Royal Australian Navy and Australian Army, consistently demonstrated their resourcefulness, professionalism, dedication, and the enduring Australian spirit of 'getting on with the job' regardless of the difficulty.

The book will serve as a reminder to all who served of our activities in East Timor. It also, for the first time, gives credit to the support given by units in Australia, whose assistance was vital for our success. For the general reader the book will reaffirm the Air Force values that we hold so dearly, and reinforce the fact that the traditions that have been developed by earlier generations is in safe hands.
