undaunted courage

 stephen ambrose

Undaunted Courage retells the journey of Captain Meriweather Lewis who, on 5 July 1803, set out across the Great Plain and into the Rockies. Thomas Jefferson had charged him with the exploration of the Mississippi and the land newly purchased from Napoleon and he undertook the task with great courage and resourcefulness.

Ambrose follows him and describes in great detail the landscape and people on his journey.
