AVIATION IN SUNRAYSIA

 john lever

This book is intended to provide an insight into aviation in the Sunraysia district since what is believed to have been the first occasion on which an aircraft landed at Mildura in September 191. The far sighted Mildura businessman Clement de Garis appreciated the potential of aircraft as a commercial tool and in the early 1920s he achieved national recognition for his efforts. Although he was not a pilot himself, he was actively involved in the promotion of aviation. By the 1930s, aircraft travel was becoming more commonplace and Mildura was included on several of the early airline routes, because it is located midway between Melbourne, Adelaide, Broken Hill and Sydney.

In the early 1940s the government constructed a new aerodrome at Mildura for the Royal Australian Air Force, and in May of 1942, Number 2 (Fighter) Operational Training Unit commenced activities in Mildura. The unit continued its vitally important training of fighter pilots until 1946 when it was disbanded; although efforts were made to have the RAAF maintain its presence there.
