sacred places

war memorials in the Australian landscape

 k.s. inglis

Sacred Places is a comprehensive study of the development of the construction of memorials to commemorate Australians who fought and died in war since World War One. These memorials are taking on a new and greater significance as the realities of the two World wars of the twentieth century slowly slip out of  living memory.

As symbols of destroyed hopes and dreams but also of faith in the future these memorials have become an integral part of the fabric of Australian society. Through them we maintain contact with those who made the supreme sacrifice and we are reminded of their selflesss dedication to the future of our country.

Hence we are beholden to ensure that we do not let them down.
