ray parkin's wartime trilogy

 ray parkin

Ray Parkin's Wartime Trilogy contains three riveting stories about Australian experiences as POWs of the Japanese war machine. The first, Out of the Smoke, tells the story of the HMAS Perth, sunk by the Japanese, and the small group of survivors who lived through the sinking and withstood the elements only to fall into enemy hands and suffer extended internment.

Into the Smother is the author's own diary account of life as a member of the POWs who worked the railway of Death. Parkin faced the oppression of the Japanese, the extreme demands of the jungle and the risk of execution if his writing was discovered. He conquered these challenges and charged himself with capturing the suffering of his mates and the horror of the work.

The Sword and the Blossom reveals the POW activities that took place on the Japanese islands themselves. Men were put to work mercilessly, and in violation of international conventions, in dangerous coal mines before the final blow, struck at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, brought the ultimate joy, and indeed exhaustion, of liberation.
