Parkin faced the oppression of the Japanese, the extreme demands of the jungle and the risk of execution if his writing was discovered. He conquered these challenges and charged himself with capturing the suffering of his mates and the horror of the work.
The Sword and the Blossom reveals the POW activities that took place on the Japanese islands themselves. Men were put to work mercilessly, and in violation of international conventions, in dangerous coal mines before the final blow, struck at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, brought the ultimate joy, and indeed exhaustion, of liberation.
