Phantoms of War is a history of Australia's SAS. It was published in 1989 as SAS: Phantoms of the Jungle. Since then the SAS has been involved in many important operations. David Horner has researched the action undertaken by this highly trained and professional outfit during the 1990s in addition to its previous history.
It contains the secret activities of the unit in Borneo and Vietnam complied using patrol reports and interviews collected since the unit's formation.
However, after Vietnam the SAS acted as a counter-terrorism force in defence of Australia. It played important roles in Somalia, Kuwait and East Timor. It was also a major flagstone in Australia's security measures during the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
