Nothing Short of war with the australian Army in Borneo 1962-1966
N. C. Smith
Military operations related to Indonesian Confrontation began in December 1962. With the creation of the Federation of Malaysia the next year, Malaysian and British Commonwealth forces were further committed to operations in Borneo.
The associated political and diplomatic endeavours by Australia to minimise the level of hostilities, and especially the part played by Australian forces, was a creditable and influential factor in this poorly documented conflict.
Reluctantly Australia was forced to commit Army engineers and other combat support personnel. As the conflict with Indonesia escalated these men were supplemented by combat troops including men from the Artillery, Special Air Service Regiment and the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Royal Australian Regiment.
