The first Australians committed to serve in Viet Nam were a group of military instructors known as the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam. Their initial role was to assist in the training of South Vietnamese ground forces but soon, they were leading local forces in battles and artillery duels, relieving besieged camps and conducting mobile strike operations. The AATTV was in Viet Nam from July 1962 to December 1972. Nearly 1000 Australians and 11 New Zealanders served with the team during that time. This curiously-named unit forged a distinct chapter in Australia's military history.
