mafeking !

the story of a siege

Malcolm flower-smith &
edmund Yorke

It was late 1899 and war was imminent in South Africa. Colonel Baden-Powell had been ordered by Britain to set up a military base in the border town of Mafeking. Psychologically affected by the fact that it was from here that the Jameson Raid was launched, the Boers determined to regain this key town.

The exceptional military leadership, indomitable spirit and personal charisma of Baden-Powell made him the ideal officer for the defence. He became the ultimate source of inspiration for the defenders of Mafeking during the epic seven-and-a-half month siege.

Six months later - by March 1900 - the Garrison was famished; death and destruction had become daily fare; the houses were wrecked and disease had reared its ugly head.

When, in May, Mafeking was finally relieved, the British nation was swept by a wave of patriotic hysteria that not even the scale and extent of armistice celebrations or VE Day in 1945 were to equal.
