little hell

the story of the 2/22nd battalion and lark force

 carl johnson

The 2/22nd Battalion was raised in Victoria and sent to Rabaul in 1941 with attachments of Lark Force. It faced the Japanese on 23 January 1942 in a battle which represented the first attack on land under the Australian flag. Little Hell is the story of 1500 men who faced the Japanese without naval support and with very few aircraft. The Japanese attack was overwhelming. Many died in the assault before 150 were massacred at Tol and Gasmata. The survivors were taken as POWs.

Some 300 Australian prisoners escaped the Japanese prison camp system. Little Hell follows these men through the jungle, over mountains and rivers, through encounters with hostile native tribes, dogged by tropical illnesses, and always pursued by the enemy.

Eventually more than 1000 of the Australian POWs were removed from the Rabaul camp. They were never heard of again. They were believed lost on the Montevideo Maru. But is this what happened? Carl Johnson, as part of his aim with this book, sets out to investigate this theory.
