His found himself thrust to the front line of the war in Korea. He had had an unhappy childhood suffering violence in the home and saw bloody hand-to-hand combat in Korea. He was awarded the Military medal when he saved three of his mates and was wounded three times himself in his two-year tour. In all this he fell in love with a women who suffered with him the unimagined aftermath of the war. Cashman was haunted by dreams when he returned and suffered distressing visions of attacking Chinese soldiers. His life was traumatic and exhausting until under consultation from a retired army psychiatrist he underwent hypnosis. This helped to unlock the memories that were buried deep within him which had helped to trigger the haunting images.
