Gillian Nikakis' parents met and married in the 1930s in colonial Rabaul, New Guinea. Life for expats was exotic, glamorous and sometimes dangerous, especially during the volcanic eruptions that eventually destroyed the town. Shortly before the Japanese invasion in 1942, Gillian's mother Tick was evacuated to Australia with her two small children, along with hundreds of others. Her father Bill was interned soon afterwards by the Japanese and was never seen again. The disappearance of men like Bill had a profound impact on their loved ones. For them the grief could never be resolved, and the anguish of not knowing lingered on, sometimes for a lifetime. In He's Not Coming Home, Gillian Nikakis describes her lifelong search for knowledge about her father, a man she barely remembers. As she follows his trail, she discovers more and more layers to what actually happened in Rabaul - including the fate oif prisoners on the Montevideo Maru, and questionable behaviour by the Australian Government.
