the gestapo hunters 464 squadron raaf 1942-45
mark lax & leon kane-maguire
464 Squadron saw action in the European Theatre of the Second World War. The Gestapo Hunters squadron was formed in September 1942 as a notionally exclusively Australian Squadron comprised of air and ground crew. However, the result was that Australian crews mixed with Canadian and British serviceman as well as those from other parts of the Empire.
The Squadron was originally equipped with the Ventura before the arrival in mid-1943 of the Mosquitoes and its relocation to the Second Tactical Air Force where low level Intruder and precision bombing attacks became the specialty of its pilots. The squadron made its names particularly in the bombing of the Amiens Prison, Aarhaus University and Copenhagen.
