from tobruk to borneo memoirs of an Italian aussie volunteer
Frank g. Perversi Frank Perversi saw service in England during the blitz; became a Rat of Tobruk for six months; transferred to the Field Security Wing of the Australian Intelligence Corps in Lebanon and was attached to forward troops in the mighty battle at El Alamein; in the first wave of amphibious operations at Lae and Finschhafen and in the attack on Shaggy Ridge in the Ramu Valley {all in New Guinea) and finally in the overwhelming amphibious operation at Balikpapan, Borneo. An enjoyable interlude was three months spent lecturing an American Counter Intelligence School in Hollandia {Dutch New Guinea). Each of these operations and the very different conditions in which they took place are, of course, described in the book objectively just as they were experienced by the author and without any attempt at dramatisation. Because of the Field Security role in action, the writer was engaged in more actions than it would normally be possible to be in. {Similar to the operations of War Correspondents and Official Photographers.) Apart from the range of activities, this book differs from many war memoirs because of the particularly analytical nature of the author's mind. The Australian-born son of Italian migrants, his motives for enlisting were complex. From that decision onwards Perversi examines from often unconventional angles many aspects of life in the services - discipline, boredom, heroism, shared experience. 188 pp - Paperback - Published 2002
