forward with the fifth

a history of the fifth battalion, 1st aif

 A.W. Keown

Forward With the Fifth was originally published in 1921 in a smaller volume. It was very well received because it was accurate and readable.

Now it has been re-released and has resumed its status as an essential guide to where and when the 5th Battalion served during 1914-1919.

The 5th was a vital component of the all Victorian Second Infantry Brigade and played an important role in the assault on the beaches at Gallipoli on April 25 1915. From this point the 5th fought alongside the Anzac troops in all theatres of the war, including the disastrous campaign at Krithia where a great number of the battalion was lost. At the end of 1915 the 5th returned to the desert of Egypt before hitting the Western Front in 1916 where it fought until 1918.

Pozieres, Amiens and Menin Road have all known the blood of the 5th Battalion, 1st AIF and those in whose veins it flowed are listed for the first time in the nominal role of 6000 included in this new edition along with hundreds of photographs of the men and places they served.
