Eureka tells the story of Australia's first and only armed rebellion at the Eureka Stockade, Ballarat, on December 3, 1854. The conflict was over the democratic rights of gold miners in the area. The state responded with the deployment of a band of armed troopers who stormed the stockade. As many as twenty miners were killed and four troopers.

This event has entered Australia's mythological history. Very few of the real facts of the raid and defence are known for sure. This is in part due to the fact that it has been romanticised by fighters for democratic rights in Australia and used by others as an illustration of shameful uprising.

Molony has attempted to get to the bottom of the myths with the book, he seeks the real truth of what happened on that day and why. He also investigates what and why were the effects of this rebellion in the development of the nation Australia subsequently.
