The Lightning was perhaps the most famous aircraft to come from the English Electric stable. The prototype of this aircraft first flew in 1954. In that year it broke the sound barrier; the first British aircraft to do so. Its advantage came from the unique layout of the twin-stacked Rolls-Royce Avon engines which doubled the thrust but only increased the frontal area by 50%. Production of the aircraft ceased in 1968, by which time, 339 Lightnings had been built. It was the standard British fighter for over 20 years, used in both the Kuwaiti and Saudi Arabian Air Forces. It was not until 1988 that the last Lightning was decommissioned.
