Desert Sands - Jungle Lands

A biography oF Major General Ken Eather

Steve Eather

From modest beginnings as an early school-leaver and army cadet Ken Eather attracted attention as a keen and able soldier. At a time when commissions in the conscript Militia were largely only offered to World War I veterans, he turned heads when he was commissioned at a very young age.

When war was declared in 1939 he was just the third soldier enlisted into the AIF in New South Wales. He formed the 2/1st Battalion of the AIF, and went on to lead it with distinction in the AIF's first major battle of World War II. He personally played a vital role in the victory over the Italians at Bardia and he was prominent in the battle to capture Tobruk.

In December 1941 , Eather was promoted to Brigadier and took over command of the 25th Brigade. In New Guinea he led that formation in the critical and highly contentious actions at Ioribaiwa and Imita Ridge, stopping the Japanese in their drive to capture Port Moresby, which if successful, would have left Australia in great jeopardy. Eather's troops then spearheaded the recapture of the Kokoda Track. He then participated in the bitter and bloody fighting at Gona on the north coast of New Guinea. Further bitter campaigns followed.

At the end of the war Eather became the military governor of New Britain and New Ireland and led the Australian contingent at the London Victory Parade in 1946. After leaving the army he was a prominent member of the Primary Producers' Union of New South Wales before being appointed executive director of the Water Research Foundation of Australia. He died in 1992, Australia's last remaining World War II general, and was buried with full military honours in Sydney.
