The Northern Territory Force organisation emerged from the 7 Military District structure following the move to Darwin by Major general EF Herring in March 1942. By the August he had been reassigned to New guinea and Maj-Gen JES Stevens assumed the Command of the Force. The story opens with a summary of the position on Steven's appointment. Thereafter both primary and secondary sources are used to continue the story of the Northern Territory Force and 12 Australian Division. Examination of War Diary data from the Australian War Memorial, interviews with men and women directly affected by the events, personnel diaries and papers, Australian Archive data, War Grave data and previous works written by participants in the events described were al examined. The result reveals the planning, structure, training and execution by Australian and Allied Forces of operations against the enemy both offensive and defensive.
