This 8th Infantry Battalion was recruited from Ballarat and central and western Victoria in August 1914. It went to Gallipoli led by Lt-Col Bolton and served with distinction at Poziers, the Somme, Bullecourt, Polygon Wood, Ypres and the Hindenburg Line. It also fought in Egypt and three of its members were awards Victoria Crosses. Its most distinguished member was Captain Percy Lay who received the Military Cross, the Distinguished Conduct Medal, the Military Medal and the Croix de Guerre With Honour Roll, Awards and Nominal Roll. |
