churchill's folly

leros and the aegean

 anthony rogers

In 1943, Winston Churchill ignoired American opposition and authorised a major operation in the Aegean. Spearheaded by the Long Range Desert Group and the Special Boat Squadron, garrison troops were sent to occupy the region. However the strategists misjudged their opponents. After pre-empting the British by securing Rhodes, the Germans assembled a force to seize the remaining islands. Overstretched resources meant that neither the Royal Air Force nor the Royal Navy could prevent a series of air and amphibious assaults by the Wehrmacht including units of the elite Division Brandenburg. Britain lost the islands and with them an entire brigade.
