blood in the sea

hms dunedin and the enigma code

 stuart gill

Acting on Enigma intelligence the cruiser Dunedin sailed for the South Atlantic. She fell victim to a lone U-boat far away from shipping lanes. An old warship dating from the First World War, she was torn open by the two torpedoes and sank in a matter of minutes. Only half the crew managed to escape and over 200 sailors were trapped below decks as she went down. For those who did make it into the sea, their ordeal had only just begun. These were shark-infested waters and there had not been time to report their position. No-one knew she was lost. No one was coming to the rescue.
