the australian flag

the first 100 years

 geoff hocking

A competition for the design of a new flag for federated Australia was held, jointly, by the journal the Review of Reviews and the government during the nation's first year, 1901.

From more than 30 000 entrants, the five winners submitted almost identical designs - giving the nation its own flag featuring the Southern Cross, the Star of Federation and the Union Jack.

Controversy raged over the design both before and after the competition. In fact, the argument still continues - as Australia enters the second century of federation, with increased demand for a banner that is symbolic of Australia's status as a truly independent sovereign nation.

This book explores the many designs that have sought the approval of the Australian people since the first 'Bowman Flag' of 1806 to the 'Reconciliation Flag' of 1999, and the many competitions that have sought designs for a new flag, over and over again.
