The author joined the RAAF and went to the Middle East where he flew with 260 RAF Squadron and was nearly shot down by the famous German fighter ace, Marseille Hans-Joachim.

      While flying against the German and Italian air force pilots, the Author became an ace himself, before returning to Australia to fly with 452 RAAF Squadron in Darwin and elsewhere.
