a bastard of a place

the Australians in Papua

 Peter Brune

This is the first comprehensive history of the five battles that changed Australia's history, Kokoda, Gona, Buna, Sanananda and Milne Bay, since the Official Historian's account  in 1959. It is based on official records as well as interviews with hundreds of the soldiers themselves. He has also undertaken a thorough tour of the battlegrounds and terrain which were the sites of so many Australian deaths.

Brune presents the events in the field via the impressions of both a highly trained AIF volunteer and a young Militia conscript. This balance is extended to the map rooms where the exigencies of war dictated the paths of decision making. Thus we are confronted with the pressures on Generals Blamey and MacArthur and the horrible consequences for the men on the battlefields.

This is a fine exposition of the flaws of a command structure that started in Australia and ended in the field in New Guinea.
