Working out of a mansion in Brisbane, the code breaking work was undertaken by a mixed team of American and Australian operatives. It is their reading of the Japanese codes that allowed the Allies to win so many crucial battles in the Pacific.
Doug Pyle took part in the occupation of the Philippines as the expertise of the Australian operators was highly valued by their American commanders. He was able to observe the ruin of Manilla and he also travelled to outlying area as the war drew to a close. Along with his fellow operators, Doug Pyle was sworn to secrecy for 30 years after the war had ended.
