No. 7 OTU Tocumwal

 john lever

Number 7 Operational Training Unit, RAAF Tocumwal was formed to train aircrew for the RAAF Heavy Bomber Squadrons that operated the B24 Liberator against the Japanese forces during World War II. The Liberator was the first heavy bomber acquired by the RAAF and proved to be a reliable and effective aircraft. Due to the number of Liberators that the Americans were to supply, the RAAF gained valuable experience in operating and organising a dedicated heavy bomber force under Australian control. Prior to the establishment of 7 OTU, Liberator crews were trained by elements of the US Air Force, but as experienced crews became available in sufficient numbers, the RAAF was able to train its on crews at Tocumwal.
