      During the Boer War, the young Lieutenant Neville Howse rushed out under fire and saved a wounded man. For his bravery he was the first VC awarded to an Australian serving in his own army. 

      He went on to serve in World War One, was one of the main instigators of the Australian Medical Corps and later became a member of parliament in the new Commonwealth of Australia.
