This long-awaited book is the last unit history of the AIF infantry battalions and acknowledges the fine record of this famous Australian unit. In the Middle east they fought at Giarabub and Tobruk and after some time in Syria, returned to the Pacific War. When they arrived home they were needed to defend Milne Bay and had been there on a couple of weeks when the Japanese invaded. They played a major role in pushing the enemy back into the sea and Corporal John French was awarded a Victoria Cross for an action in which he was killed. There next devastating and majestic campaign was at Buna where they smashed through the Japanese defences, where the Americans had been unable to succeed. With Australian tanks in support [VITAL FACTOR] the battalion had terrible losses but there action was the beginning of the end of the enemy's Buna base. They also served on Shaggy Ridge and at Balikpapan. This book includes awards, casualties and a nominal roll.
