Katoomba was my first Australian ship, perhaps more importantly, it was the first ship I was posted to for "ship's duties", as opposed to "for training", and I became the ship's navigator. At this time the tedium for constant convoy duties was over and the ship was engaged in helping rid the Barrier Reef of mines, laid mostly by the RAN, to protect the coastal route against intrusion by Japanese Submarines. On most occasions, Katoomba was the rear ship whose job it was to lay danbuoys which marked the edge of the swept area. Inevitably this meant that she had to negotiate her way past the mines cut by the ships ahead. It was my job to keep the mine-sweeping plot up to date. That there was another side, the sailors, is revealed in this account of the ship's involvements, and life abroad, from the beginning to the end. Jack Fox is to be commended for giving all AMS sailors and Officers a story they can identify with. J.D. Stevens Real Admiral RAN (Rtd)
