After matriculating in 1940, which included studies in navigation, he joined the R.A.A.F. in 1941 and was eventually posted to Britain's Bomber Command and 460 Squadron R.A.A.F. He was involved in a number of raids over Germany until finally in 1943, an attack on Wuppertal ended in disaster when anti-aircraft guns fatally damaged his Lancaster. The author and his crew safely baled out over Belgium. A few weeks of freedom followed, as the escapee attempted to reach Spain, eventually meeting up with the Belgium 'Underground'. All seemed well but the escape system was bogus and before long the author was captured by the Gestapo. What followed was a series of prisons and camps where the prisoners fought against hunger and sometimes cold, as they waited the outcome of the war. Eventually liberated by the Russians the author found his way to Britain and then home to Australia. This story gives an interesting insight into life-on-the-run and the boring years of prison life.
