When the endeavour set sail on a 'scientific expedition' from Plymouth in August 1768, only a very few knew the real reason behind its journey. Mariners of old had brought back strange stories of snow-capped peaks glimpsed on the southern horizon, or pagan peoples who tipped their arrows with silver. This was to be a voyage of discovery, a journey into uncharted waters in search of the fabled Terra Australis
