During the Boer War in 1900, a force of about 300 Australian Mounted Infantry - later the Light Horsemen - was guarding the Elands River Post. With them were about 200 Rhodesian troops.

Suddenly, about  2500 Boers, supported by artillery, began attacking the defenders who quickly   dug-in and hung to their exposed position.. Over the next 10 days the Australians and Rhodesians lived amongst hundreds af dead cattle and horses, with bullets flying in all directions. All the while, relief columns tried to lift the siege, some of them very half-hearted attempts.

This is a must-read as we remember the Boer War that erupted 100 years ago this year.
