This is the story of 459 Squadron RAAF that was formed in Egypt in
The Squadron was initially equipped with Hudson aircraft and its
operations ranged from anti-submarine and convoy escort patrols to
shipping strikes, that included the sinking of U-boat U-97.
Their operational role was closely linked to the fortunes of the
see-sawing land battles in North Africa as they flew from inhospitable
desert landing grounds, created from bare desert landscape.
Air crew and ground staff alike, suffered sever privations,
including sandstorms, flooding and air attacks. They suffered together
to keep the aircraft operational.
459 Squadron played a major and crucial part in the success of the
Desert Air Force.
