The Third was the longest-serving division in the Australian Army. It was raised in 1916, it's first commander - General Monash. It remained in existence until 1991 with only two short periods of hiatus during 75 years of service. The bulk of the men that served with the division were Victorians, but inevitably, reinforcements came from all states.
In the second world war, probably the most famous unit of the division was 39 Battalion and it's gallant stand on the Kokoda track. Other actions were fought around Salamua and on Bougainville.
