For over 100 years the Queensland (Kennedy) Regiment and in its later forms and titles has produced young Australians who fought gallantly for the nation. Amongst it heroes are Quinn of Gallipoli fame, Bugden who was awarded a WW1 Victoria Cross, Gordon who did the same in WW2 and Payne who trained with the battalion before going to Vietnam with the AATTV. Over the years the unit has also been known as: 31 Battalion, 2/31 Battalion, 31/51 Battalion (militia), 31 Battalion Royal Queensland Regiment and other names at times. This is a fine history of the Australian Army and of the poepl of North Queensland. Many men from the ranks in this unit went on to high ranks in the army and important roles in civilian society. The battalion still lives as an Army Reserve unit based on Townsville. |
