This history discusses the treatment of the sick and dying aboard RAN ships in war and peace. The author writes of the terrible conditions that faced medical staff when a ship was in battle and the casualties began to mount.

Often in a hell of heat and thundering guns, men worked to keep the wounded alive. The book describes several famous battles from the view point of the sick bay attendants.

The book also covers land-based hospitals, training establishments, HMAS Manoora and the role of the modern naval medical teams in the gulf and elsewhere.
