In 1942, 22 Salvation Army Bandsmen enlisted into the AIF to form the battalion band of 2/22nd Battalion were killed in the invasion of Rabaul. One bandsman alone survived. For four months Fred Kollmorgen trekked through one thousand kilometres of steamy, fetid, enemy patrolled jungle.
