BILL NEWTON V.C. [ WWII - RAAF -VICTORIA CROSS - NEW GUINEA - 22 SQUADRON- BOSTONS] MARK WEATE Victorian Bill Newton took a long time to get away from training new pilots in Australia and reach the 'hot war' in New Guinea. When his chance did come, he joined 22 RAAF Squadron and it did not take long for him to make his mark. His bravery during bombing raids was soon noticed as he often pressed home attacks through heavy anti-aircraft fire. Newton’s career and life was cut short when he was shot down over Salamaua, escaped the sinking Boston but was captured. The Japanese executed him near Lae – a brave man was dead – fighting in the cause of freedom. He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
