Without doubt the full story of 617 (RAF) Squadron, Bomber Command's renowned 'Dambusters', is one of the best-known, true-life adventures of the Second World War. A particularly gallant exploit assured them of an immortal place in history, when a force of Lancaster bombers, equipped with a unique bouncing bomb, breached or damaged three of Germany's mighty Ruhr dams. It also earned Wing Commander Guy Gibson a Victoria Cross for his insuperable courage and inspirational leadership.

Looking back over sixty years, the Dambusters raid is generally regarded as a major turning point in the war. Its audacity and success gave a huge morale boost to the beleaguered population of Britain. Several Australians participated in the attack, in which eight of nineteen crews failed to return, and this book tells their stories.

The exploits of 617 Squadron certainly did not end with that one momentous assault on Nazi Germany. In fact the Dambusters became a special operations squadron for the remainder of the war, and this book tells of the many dangerous and costly operations that followed, from a uniquely Australian aspect.

Colin Burgess interviewed many of the Australian crew members from 617 Squadron for this long-awaited, commemorative book, including those who took part in the Dambusters raid of 16-17 May, 1943. Based near Sydney, he is the author of more than a dozen non-fiction books, and has written extensively on the Australian prison-of-war experience. His previous military works include, The Diggers of Colditz, Destination Buchenwald; and Freedom or Death.
