As account of the very brief life of HMA Submarine AE1, the circumstances surrounding her loss and the Author’s attempts to locate the wreck.  She sailed from England to Australia in 1914 and was sent on her first operational deployment as part of the Australian force sent to capture German New Guinea.  Shortly after arriving off New Britain the submarine was lost with all hands, having been in Australian Navy service for a mere six months. She sank from either enemy action or, an unknown accident. It is one of the RAN’s enduring mysteries. The author has searched for AE1 for more than thirty years. In recent times, his searches have been getting him closer and closer to the location of the ship and its entombed crew.  Someday soon, the missing men will be found, still entombed in their steel coffin.
