During the New Guinea war, this Australian Army engineering unit was involved in the project to build the 100 kilometre ‘Bulldog Road’ from the south coast of New Guinea to the battle front at Wau. It was needed to provide a vital supply line for our defending troops who were withstanding a savage Japanese onslaught. The conditions on the Owen Stanley Range were tough, forging a lifelong spirit of comradeship and mateship in these men. This unit, numbering about 250, demonstrated a great commitment to each other in wartime and since.
